This piece was actually a commission for a co-worker.  She asked me to paint something for her.  When I asked her what she liked, she reported that she collected owls and crows.  When I thought about the crow, it occurred to me that they kind of have a bad reputation for being scavengers, noise-makers, and over all nuisances to humanity.  I thought about what the crow might feel if we gave him the opportunity to speak.  Thus, was born the image of the sad little crow hanging out in the darkness by himself, being stuck with a reputation and no one understanding what it’s like to be a crow.
