This sculpture is hanging on the wall outside the Yaquina Head Lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. It was not a nice day at the beach, which isn’t unusual. With a little manipulation from Snapseed, I was able to capture light and make this photo brighter and more bold.
To me, the sculpture shows the power and massiveness of the ocean; calm floating waves in the background and enormous waves coming from nowhere in a beautiful swirling of sea blue. I’ve always had a fear of the ocean, being okay with looking at it from afar…but very wary of getting any part of my body in it. I know its power. I know my vulnerability. Together, they form an equation that mimics tragedy.
I say let’s not.
There is something beautiful about watching waves and listening to the roar and crashing as I drift off to sleep. The ocean, so meditative in one respect and powerful in another. Sometimes, I wish I could ask old Poseidon what he’s so angry about.
